Is Newick a nice place to live?

A perfectly kept village green is at the picturesque heart of Newick, which, according to legend, is set on an ancient pilgrims’ way between Winchester and Canterbury. Certainly Newick, which was first inhabited more than 1,000 years ago, has a rich history which underpins its present-day charm. The parish church of St Mary dates from Norman times, and each of the three village pubs has its own intriguing links to the past.

The village has every modern attraction too. It is a thriving and friendly community which has a primary school rated outstanding; stores including a butcher, baker, post office and pharmacy, and a village health centre. There is an impressive range of active sports clubs (from rugby to bowls) and community organisations including an amateur dramatic society. A perfect place for every age group.

Newick lies deep in the beautiful East Sussex countryside, with Ashdown Forest and Chailey Common Nature Reserve close by. But for the commuter, Haywards Heath is only a few miles away, with a comfortable 45-minute journey to London, and the busy towns of Lewes, Burgess Hill and Uckfield are all easily accessible.

The main postal districts we cover in Newick are BN8, TN22 and RH17. If you’re looking for some inspiration for where to move to in Newick and the surrounding areas, below are some of our favourite areas.

Lowers Station Road

A much sought after road on the western side of the village with a great mix of both character, period homes as well as more modern, contemporary ones all on great plots on this lovely tree lined street.

The Green

The Green is located on the east side of Newick and has plenty of amenities for residents. There is a popular pub right in the centre of the area, plus a convenience store, community centre, and Indian restaurant. Newick Bowls Club is also close by and there are plenty of bus stops for travelling further afield. Homes here range from smaller terraced properties to larger semi-detached homes.

North Chailey

North Chailey is a village located just west of Newick, around 5 miles from Haywards Heath. The area is perfect for those who want to get out into nature, with the Red House Common and Memorial Common Nature Reserves on the edge of the village. There’s also a cricket club and sports ground. Homes here consist of listed country homes, converted farmsteads and period properties, and new build homes.

Piltdown

Piltdown is an area that consists of a series of hamlets, located to the northeast of Newick, 3 miles from Uckfield. It’s an ideal location for those who want a quieter, rural lifestyle, whilst still retaining good transport links to the larger town of Uckfield. The Piltdown Golf Course is nearby and there is a selection of traditional local pubs. Homes here range from Victorian farmhouses to characterful cottages, plus more modern proprieties.
